Milvian Bridge, Battle of

Milvian Bridge, Battle of
Famous battle in Rome (q.v.), where Constantine I the Great (q.v.) defeated his rival Maxentius (q.v.) for control of the West. At the same time he became the imperial protector and promoter of Christianity. According to the Christian writers Eusebios of Caesarea and Lactantius (qq.v.), prior to the battle the Christian God communicated to Constantine (q.v.), prompting him to devise a special battle standard called the labarum (q.v.), which Constantine believed won him this victory.
